We pull the deck boards to check the joists before we quote anything, because a deck can look fine on top and still be rotting where it bolts to the house. We use hot-dipped galvanized or stainless hardware below grade so the fasteners don't rust out in five years like the box-store screws do. Spacing between boards gets set for drainage, not just looks, so water doesn't sit and start the rot cycle again. If composite decking makes more sense for your yard than wood, we'll say so, even though the wood job pays about the same.
